Fossil Free Campaign Director Job Description

CSSC is hiring a Campaign Director for the fossil fuel divestment campaign (Fossil Free). The Campaign Director will be responsible for supporting and providing guidance to divestment campaigns on campuses across the state of California, helping cultivate new student leaders, engaging with coalition partners, and supporting CSSC’s internal functions and development.

This position is hired at 32 hours/week. The Campaign Director’s position may work remotely (within the
state of California), requires ability and willingness to travel for work, maintain active communication via conference calls and emails, and have a strong aptitude for time management and self­-discipline.

The Campaign Director is responsible for the following:
Strategy support and guidance.​CSSC provides support for all divestment campaigns at California’s higher education institutions. This includes having regular communication with campuses, visiting campuses to run trainings and help facilitate meetings when needed, and
connecting students with financial and non­-financial resources.

Mentorship and Development of Student Leadership. ​The Campaign Director is responsible for helping develop student leadership both in Fossil Free campaigns and within CSSC’s leadership body. This includes developing and running trainings at leadership retreats, at campuses, or at larger events; managing and supporting the Field Organizer internship program and the interns themselves; working with students to identify areas for growth within their personal and professional development; and working with coalition partners to connect student leadership with trainings.

Publications. ​The Campaign Director will work with students, CSSC leadership, and coalition­ partners on drafting, editing, and distributing publications related to their work.

Coalition Building. ​The Campaign Director will be responsible for maintaining and developing relationships with coalition partners, including, but not limited to: 350.org, Energy Action Coalition, Responsible Endowments Coalition, As You Sow, etc.

Strategic Planning. ​The Campaign Director is responsible for building out strategic short­ and long­ term campaign and organizational plans. These plans should be time­bound, specific, and focus on meeting the goals of the organization and of the campaign. They should include key dates, required budget, and areas for involvement from other members of CSSC leadership.

Logistics, Event­Support, and Administrative Duties. ​The Campaign Director is expected to maintain certain administrative duties, including, but not limited to: attending and helping plan CSSC leadership retreats and convergences; maintaining key statistics of campaign work; participating in staff calls and filling out staff logs; participating in and/or facilitating Operating Team communications, participating in the Programs Committee.

Growth of Organization. ​Campaign directors are expected to help develop new projects and campaigns, especially in the Fossil Free Platform; work with the Development Director on securing funding and writing reports; and evaluate current operating methodologies and introduce new systems within the organization.

CSSC seeks self ­motivated individuals with strong organizing and campus engagement backgrounds. Other desirable qualities include strong analytic skills, written and verbal communication skills, and a collaborative,team player demeanor. Preference for individuals with past experiences with CSSC, similar coalitions, or a strong willingness to learn.

      We hope to fill this position through the end of our Fossil Free campaign. It’s hard to say when applications will open up again but check back when you graduate. If you are interested in helping out as a student shoot us an email!
