About Me
I am a Environmental Studies major with an emphasis in Sustainability and Social Justice. During my first semester in the major I also helped coordinate the SF State CSSC Convergence Fall 2008 and that is how I became involved in ECO Students and the CSSC. Since then I’ve been the leader of ECO Students for 3 semesters where I’ve helped plan numerous events and campaigns. I also work as an intern for the sustainability coordinator on campus where I use my position to push the faculty and staff towards sustainable initiatives through education and outreach.
How I Got Involved In CSSC
I found out how cool all the people were when a convergence was hosted at SF State. From there, I realized the CSSC has the power to be so influential in our state, that I couldn’t not stay involved.
The Area of Sustainability That Interests Me Most
Sustainability education, and environmental law
The Role of Student Action in Sustainability
Students (and young people) have the most important role of uniting our peers to create change through activism. We’re the most affected by the damage being caused, and the lack of change being generated. We have the ability to understand what is and/or is not being done in legislature or through NGOs (unlike our younger siblings or the so called “future generations” that are going to feel the pain of environmental degradation and neglect) and the passion to stand up for what we believe in. In my experience students are also very good at uniting for a common goal rather than getting hung up on details that are ultimately irrelevant. For the environment’s sake, it’s now or never and students have the power to make sure change comes now.
Sustainability Projects I’ve Worked On
- TGIF (Sustainability and Environmental Equity Development Fund)
- coordinating sustainability events: Bike to School Day, Earth Day, Sustainable SFSU Week
- recycling education in student housing
